Our Community

“We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community…Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.”

— Cesar Chávez

The Garces Foundation, housed in the iconic Bok Building, which sits amidst one of the city’s largest population of Latino immigrants, primarily serves Spanish-speaking immigrants in Philadelphia.

While some members of our population have strong English language skills, many – and the focus of our education efforts – have limited English language skills. According to the most recent U.S. Census data, about 22% of people in the area live at the poverty level, though this value understates the percentage in our specific population.

As the political climate has shifted and become even less certain for America's new immigrants, this need has become even more acute, and the Foundation occupies a unique, vital space and contributes to providing this population a badly needed safety net.
